This 3 day introduction to Business Analysis is intended for the new Business Analyst, or experienced Business Analyst requiring formal education. It clearly answers questions such as "What is Business Analysis?" and "What skills do I need as a Business Analyst?"

Course Topics

Day 1 - What is Business Analysis?

  • The IIBA (International Institute for Business Analysis®), the BABOK (Business Analysis Body of Knowledge®) and the profession of Business Analysis are introduced.
  • The AS-IS - Making the invisible visible
Managers in business want and need to make informed decisions. Business processes can be difficult to comprehend fully. The Business Analyst must work with the company to make these business processes visible to allow understanding, to find out if they fall short of expectations and to uncover reasons why they fall short.
  • Root Cause Analysis
It is not sufficient to determine that your business processes do not function as expected. Further analysis must be conducted to determine where and why before the problem can be rectified.

Day 2 - Discovering the TO-BE

  • How to discover and define the requirements for the problem(s) discovered in the current state (AS-IS). We begin with Vision and Scope - a high level direction for how to solve the problem(s). We then discuss how to gather the details in order to create a Solution Scope document that is complete, consistent, correct, precise, efficient, effective, and unambiguous.

Day 3 - Documenting the TO-BE

  • Best practices for documenting Solution Scope is covered. Discovering other roles for the Business Analyst follows, concentrating on Quality Assurance and how the Business Analyst is in a unique position to contribute.
